Budtender

Definition: A budtender is a retail employee at a cannabis dispensary who helps customers choose products, explains how they’re used, and completes the sale. The name is a play on “bartender.” A good budtender knows the store’s flower, edibles, vapes, and concentrates and can walk you through lab results, dosing, and consumption methods.

Budtenders are your bartenders in a dispensary
What Does a Budtender Do?
- Checks IDs and verifies customers meet the legal age, usually 21 for adult use
- Explains product types, from edibles to concentrates
- Helps customers read labels, including THC and CBD content and terpene profiles
- Tracks sales to keep each customer within state purchase limits
Can a Budtender Give Medical Advice?
No. Budtenders can share product information and general guidance, but most states prohibit them from diagnosing conditions or making medical claims. If you’re using cannabis for a health condition or take other medications, talk with a doctor or pharmacist. Some states require budtenders to complete training on safe use and responsible sales.
What Should You Ask Your Budtender?
- What’s the THC and CBD content, and can I see the lab results?
- Which terpenes are dominant in this product?
- How long does it take to kick in, and how long will it last?
- What’s a sensible starting dose for someone with my tolerance?
Be honest about your experience level. That’s the fastest way to get a recommendation that fits.
