Solventless Extract
Definition: A solventless extract is a cannabis concentrate made without chemical solvents like butane, propane, or ethanol. Instead, it separates the resin glands from the plant using physical methods: sifting, ice water, heat, and pressure. Kief, hash, bubble hash, and rosin are all solventless extracts.
How Are Solventless Extracts Made?
- Dry sift: dried flower is rubbed or tumbled over fine screens so the trichomes fall through. The result is kief.
- Ice water hash (bubble hash): plant material is agitated in ice water, which makes trichomes brittle so they snap off and can be collected through mesh bags.
- Pressed hash: kief or bubble hash is pressed and warmed into a solid block, the traditional method used for centuries.
- Rosin: flower or hash is squeezed between heated plates in a rosin press, which forces out the resin as an oil.
Solventless vs. Solvent-Based Concentrates
Solvent-based concentrates like BHO, shatter, and distillate use chemicals to dissolve the resin, then purge them out. Done right in a licensed lab, residual solvents fall within safety limits. Solventless products skip that step entirely, so there’s no residual solvent to worry about, and many people feel they keep a truer flavor of the original plant. Solventless methods are also far safer to make at home, since they don’t involve flammable gases.
Is “Solventless” the Same as “Solvent-Free”?
No. “Solvent-free” sometimes describes a solvent-based product that tested below detectable solvent levels after purging. “Solventless” means no solvent was ever used. If that distinction matters to you, check the label and lab results.
