Rosin Press

Rosin Press

Definition: A rosin press is a machine with two heated plates that squeeze cannabis flower, kief, or hash under high pressure to extract rosin, a solventless concentrate. It uses no chemicals, only heat and pressure, so it’s the most common way to make concentrates at home where that’s legal.

How Does a Rosin Press Work?

You load your starting material into a mesh filter bag, fold it in parchment paper, and place it between the plates. As the plates heat and close, the resin in the trichomes melts and is forced out through the filter onto the parchment. You then scrape up the rosin with a dab tool.

What Are the Types of Rosin Presses?

  • Manual: hand-crank or lever presses. Affordable and compact, best for small batches.
  • Hydraulic: a hand-pumped hydraulic jack creates high pressure with little effort.
  • Pneumatic: runs on an air compressor for fast, consistent, hands-off pressing.
  • Electric: motor-driven presses with precise digital control and no compressor needed.

What Settings Affect Rosin Quality?

The three big variables are temperature, pressure, and press time. Lower heat preserves more terpenes and gives lighter, more flavorful rosin, while higher heat raises yield but can darken it. Hash and kief generally press best at lower temperatures than flower. Starting material matters most: fresh, well-cured, resin-rich flower or high-grade hash produces the best results.

Is Making Rosin at Home Legal?

It depends on where you live. Some states that allow home grow also allow solventless home processing, while others restrict any concentrate manufacturing without a license. Check your state’s rules first.
