Feminized Seeds

Definition: Feminized seeds are cannabis seeds bred to produce only female plants. Females grow the resinous flowers people harvest, while males make pollen. Breeders create feminized seeds by triggering a female plant to grow pollen sacs and using that pollen on another female, so the offspring carry only female genetics.

Why Do Growers Want Only Female Plants?

Female cannabis flowers are where most of the cannabinoids and terpenes are concentrated. If a male pollinates them, the plant puts energy into seeds instead of resin. Unpollinated, seedless buds are known as sinsemilla. With regular seeds, roughly half the plants can turn out male, and growers have to spot and remove them early. Feminized seeds skip that step.

How Are Feminized Seeds Made?

Breeders spray a female plant with a solution, most often silver thiosulfate or colloidal silver, that blocks the hormone ethylene and causes the plant to grow male flowers. That pollen still carries only female genetics. When it fertilizes another female, the resulting seeds produce female plants. A 2021 peer-reviewed study used this method to produce entirely female offspring in a high CBD breeding program.

Are Feminized Seeds Guaranteed to Be Female?

Quality feminized seeds produce female plants at a very high rate, but no seed is a perfect guarantee. Stress from light leaks, heat, or irregular schedules can cause some females to develop male flowers, often called hermaphrodites or “hermies.” Buying from reputable breeders and keeping conditions stable lowers that risk.

Feminized vs. Regular vs. Autoflower Seeds

Regular seeds produce males and females, which breeders need for making new crosses. Feminized seeds focus on harvest. Autoflower describes when a plant flowers, not its sex, so many seeds are both autoflowering and feminized. Growers who want a reliable copy of one plant often skip seeds entirely and take a clone.
