Dab Pen

Dab Pen

Definition: A dab pen is a portable, battery-powered vaporizer for cannabis concentrates such as wax, shatter, budder, and rosin. It’s the same device many people call a wax pen. You load a small dab onto a heating element, press a button, and inhale the vapor, getting a dab-style hit without a rig or torch.

How Does a Dab Pen Work?

A dab pen pairs a rechargeable battery with an atomizer, the heating chamber, and a mouthpiece. When powered, the atomizer’s coil or ceramic plate heats the concentrate until it vaporizes. Many pens offer several temperature presets, and some newer models use quartz or ceramic cups for cleaner flavor. For a step-by-step guide, see our entry on the wax pen.

Dab Pen vs. Dab Rig

  • Portability: a dab pen fits in a pocket; a dab rig stays at home.
  • Setup: pens heat at the press of a button; rigs typically need a torch or e-nail.
  • Experience: rigs deliver bigger, water-cooled hits and finer temperature control; pens are smaller and more discreet.

Is a Dab Pen the Same as a Vape Pen?

Not quite. In everyday slang, people sometimes use the terms loosely, but a vape pen usually means a battery with a pre-filled oil cartridge, while a dab pen has an open chamber for solid concentrates.

Concentrates are potent. Start with a rice-grain-sized amount and wait a few minutes before taking more.
