Weedmaps

Definition: Weedmaps is a cannabis technology company whose website and app help people find dispensaries, delivery services, product menus, deals, and reviews. Founded in 2008 in California, it’s one of the largest cannabis marketplaces in North America, and it also sells software and advertising to cannabis businesses. Its parent company went public in 2021.

What Can You Do on Weedmaps?

  • Find nearby dispensaries and delivery services
  • Browse menus, prices, and daily deals
  • Read customer reviews and compare products and strains
  • Place orders for pickup or delivery where retailers allow it

How Does Weedmaps Make Money?

Mostly through business subscriptions and advertising. Retailers and brands pay for listings, placement, and promotional tools, plus software for menus, ordering, and point of sale.

Is Everything on Weedmaps Licensed?

Not always historically. In the past, regulators in California criticized the platform for listing unlicensed businesses, and Weedmaps later began requiring state license numbers for listings. Before you buy, check that the retailer shows a valid license number and verify it with your state regulator’s license lookup.
