510 Threaded

Definition: A 510 thread is the standard screw connection that joins most vape cartridges to their batteries. Because nearly every cannabis cartridge and pen battery uses it, a “510 cart” from one brand will usually fit a “510 battery” from another. It’s the closest thing the vape industry has to a universal plug.

What Does 510 Mean?

The name is usually explained as 10 threads spaced 0.5 millimeters apart on the connector. The standard came from early e-cigarette hardware and was adopted by cannabis cartridge makers, which is why it became so widespread.

Why Does 510 Thread Matter?

Compatibility. With a 510 battery, you can switch between brands and strains of cartridges without buying new hardware. Proprietary pod systems, by contrast, only work with their own branded pods.

How Do You Know if a Cartridge Is 510 Compatible?

Check the packaging, or look at the base: a 510 cartridge has a small male threaded post that screws into the battery. If it clicks or slides into a specific device instead, it’s a proprietary pod. A few wide cartridges screw in fine but sit awkwardly on slim batteries, so check the diameter too.

Troubleshooting 510 Connections

If a cart won’t hit, make sure it’s screwed in snugly but not over-tightened, which can push the center pin down. Gently clean the contact points with a cotton swab and a little isopropyl alcohol, and check that the battery is charged.
