CBD Cartridge

CBD Cartridge

Definition: A CBD cartridge is a pre-filled vape cartridge containing cannabidiol (CBD) oil, usually derived from hemp, that attaches to a vape pen battery. Most use the standard 510 thread. Vaping delivers CBD quickly, but CBD carts are largely unregulated, so quality and contents vary widely.

How Does a CBD Cartridge Work?

It works like any vape cartridge: a battery heats an atomizer that vaporizes the oil. Fillings range from CBD isolate or distillate to broad-spectrum and full-spectrum oils, often with added terpenes for flavor.

Do CBD Cartridges Contain THC?

Some do. Full-spectrum products can legally contain small amounts of THC, and mislabeling is common. A 2017 JAMA study of CBD products sold online found THC in about 1 in 5. Under a federal law passed in 2025, hemp products are set to be capped at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container starting December 11, 2026. If you’re drug tested, choose products with a batch certificate of analysis showing no detectable THC.

Are CBD Carts Legal?

Hemp-derived CBD became federally legal to produce under the 2018 Farm Bill, but the FDA hasn’t approved any CBD vape product, and states set their own rules. Some states restrict vape sales broadly.

How Do You Choose a Safe CBD Cartridge?

  • Look for a recent third-party lab test (COA) matching the batch
  • Avoid carts with thickening agents; vitamin E acetate was strongly linked by the CDC to the 2019 EVALI lung injury outbreak
  • Choose established brands with clear ingredient lists
